MRI and high-resolution ultrasound of plantar plate pathology in the painful forefoot of patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction Forefoot pain in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is associated with functional and structural changes at the MTP joints. Previous cadaveric studies have suggested that forefoot deformities in RA might result from the failure of a complex ligamentous system and displacement of the plantar plates (PP). MRI and high resolution ultrasound (HRUS) have been reported to identify the PP and visualise tears in otherwise healthy subjects.

Plantar plate pathology is associated with erosive disease in the painful forefoot of patients with rheumatoid arthritis
BACKGROUND Disease-related foot pathology is recognised to have a significant impact on mobility and functional capacity in the majority of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The forefoot is widely affected and the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints are the most common site of symptoms. The plantar plates are the fibrocartilaginous distal attachments of the plantar fascia inserting into the...
متن کاملMagnetic resonance imaging versus musculoskeletal ultrasound for identification and localization of plantar plate tears.
PURPOSE Plantar plate injuries have been identified as a cause of forefoot pain and deformity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) have been suggested as appropriate imaging modalities for this pathology. A comparison of these two modalities utilizing intra-operatively pathology as the reference standard has not been published. METHODOLOGY 51 feet of 42 consec...
متن کاملPrevalence of MTP joint involvement in the painful forefoot of patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis
Introduction Despite the introduction of more aggressive systemic therapies for the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) MTP joint pain & deformity is commonly reported. Previous research has proposed that articular damage in the forefoot of patients with RA is probably caused by synovitis leading to destruction of the bone & soft tissues, which might result in the failure of a complex ligam...
متن کاملForefoot pathology in rheumatoid arthritis identified with ultrasound may not localise to areas of highest pressure: cohort observations at baseline and twelve months
BACKGROUND Plantar pressures are commonly used as clinical measures, especially to determine optimum foot orthotic design. In rheumatoid arthritis (RA) high plantar foot pressures have been linked to metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint radiological erosion scores. However, the sensitivity of foot pressure measurement to soft tissue pathology within the foot is unknown. The aim of this study was to ...
متن کاملPlantar pressures in rheumatoid arthritis using prefabricated metatarsal padding.
We sought to determine whether one of two prefabricated insole designs could better manage high forefoot plantar pressures in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Ten subjects with rheumatoid arthritis who experienced pain with shod weightbearing were studied by using a plantar pressure measurement system. Two insole designs and a shoe-only control condition were randomly tested in repeated tria...
